On 13 June, our Headteacher, Nick Turley, completed an incredible 40-mile running challenge from Threlkeld Primary School to Old Hutton Primary School — connecting two schools and communities that have played an important part in his life.

Nick previously had the privilege of being Headteacher at Threlkeld before moving to Old Hutton, where he is now proud to lead our school. Starting the challenge at Threlkeld and finishing at Old Hutton made the journey particularly meaningful, bringing together two places and communities that have shaped him both personally and professionally.

The “40 for 40” challenge also marked Nick's 40th birthday, which he celebrated on 27 March. Rather than celebrating this milestone with a challenge for himself, he wanted to use it as an opportunity to give something back and support children and families.

Nick completed the run with members of staff Yolande Nelson, Deborah Dodgson and Sue Hastwell as well a group of school parents and members of the school community.

Running for three important causes

The challenge was inspired by the incredible strength, compassion and resilience shown by our school community over the past 18 months. Two of our school families have experienced profound loss, and the kindness and support shown by our community has been truly humbling. Nick chose to raise money for three causes that are particularly close to his heart:

• Winston's Wish – providing vital support for children and young people who are grieving the death of someone important to them.

• The Poppy Atkinson Football Fund – helping to provide grassroots football opportunities for children across the country.

• A special children's book fund – supporting organisations and schools to provide children with wonderful books. Nick is passionate about the power of reading and believes that falling in love with stories can open worlds of imagination, understanding and hope.

Every pound raised was shared equally between the three causes.

An incredible community effort

The 40 miles were physically demanding, but the day itself was incredibly special. Nick was overwhelmed by the support he received along the route, with people coming out to cheer him on, running sections alongside him, offering encouragement, making donations and sending messages of support.

That kindness helped carry him through some particularly challenging moments and turned the challenge into something much bigger than a run.

In total, nearly £4,980 was raised for the three good causes — an incredible achievement made possible by the generosity of our families, friends, local community and supporters from much further afield.

The challenge was never simply about running 40 miles. It was about celebrating community, remembering those who are facing incredibly difficult circumstances, and using a personal milestone to make a positive difference to the lives of children and families.

We are incredibly proud of the 40 for 40 challenge and hugely grateful to everyone who supported it.

What’s next?

And, of course, we couldn’t finish there! Plans are already underway for an even bigger challenge next year. After the 40 for 40, the bar has been raised — and we’re excited to see what comes next. We’re keeping the details under wraps for now, but one thing is certain: it will be bigger, tougher and, most importantly, once again focused on bringing our community together and raising money for causes that make a real difference to children and families.
