In Class 1 and 2, children in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Key Stage 1 - Years 1 and 2 (aged between 4 and 7) enjoy learning together in our exciting classrooms and outdoor areas.
We have 2 rooms, giving us lots of space to be creative! Our classes are places where learning is fun!
We share 2 teachers, Mrs Hopkins and Mrs Hayes, as well as teaching assistants, Mrs Halliwell, Mrs Nelson, Miss Ramsbottom and Mrs Davis..
We have strong links throughout the year with Old Hutton Pre-School, which greatly facilitate transition into school and extend our range of activities, resources and friends!
In EYFS, a play-based curriculum is followed which encourages independent & effective learning in a wide range of areas of continuous provision. Teaching and learning topics are adapted to take account of the children’s own interests and incorporate all areas of the EYFS curriculum: Communication and Language, Physical development, Personal Social and Emotional development, Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding of the World and Expressive Arts and Design.
Teaching and learning for pupils in Years 1 and 2 is topic-based and includes lots of practical activities, explorations, investigations, visits and visitors. English, Maths and Reading activities are delivered daily within structured sessions which are pitched specifically to individual pupil’s abilities.
A weekly Forest School session enhances our topic work, understanding of the environment and seasons, social skills, risk taking and problem-solving.
Reading is taught through the Letters and Sounds Phonics programme which is delivered to meet individual needs and stages of development in discreet daily phonics sessions. Pupils also learn to read with our wide variety of books in banded levels. Group Guided Reading sessions happen daily in class and pupils bring individual reading books home to share every day.
